Fit Kids Perform Better at Challenging Learning Tasks
We continuously hear about Physical Education cuts in our schools and at the same time read study after study which link children’s fitness to improved learning outcomes. So why does the trend continue? That’s a good question. Especially when a more recent study took a look at how kids learn better. Researchers saw that providing intermittent reinforcement of correct answers during a memorization task improved kids’ ability to memorize facts. But interestingly enough, they also saw that when the intermittent reinforcement was not provided (proving to be a harder learning task) fitter kids performed better than less fit kids. So not only do fit kids have higher achievements scores, they are also better equipped to handle more challenging learning situations. Yet another reason why we should continue to be role models for our children in our love of fitness and do all we can to provide opportunities for them to be active and fit.
