Honoring a Local Hero

Air Force Staff Sergeant Timothy P. Davis – nicknamed “DT”.

DT grew up in Montesano, Washington, where he excelled as a high school wrestler. His friends remembered him as “good at everything…Whatever he did, he did right.”

Once, as a kid, he rode his bike down a steep hill — and as if to prove his own fearlessness, he did it with his eyes closed and his hands off the handlebars. He split his chin open. But at the hospital, when the doctors injected him with anesthetic and worked to patch him up, “he didn’t make a sound. There was never any doubt he was tough.”

DT took his toughness with him into the Air Force, where he served for a decade. As a combat controller, he was a member of the branch’s Special Tactics team, and his entire unit had previously won a Bronze Star for their actions in combat. DT himself had been awarded with a Purple Heart after being wounded with shrapnel.

On February 20, 2009, in Oruzgan, Afghanistan, DT’s vehicle hit a roadside bomb. He and two others — Army Staff Sergeant Jeremy Bessa and Master Sergeant David Hurt — died from injuries sustained from the blast and from subsequent small arms fire.

At the time of his death, his son, Timmy Jr., was one year old. DT and his wife, Meaghan, were a month away from their fifth wedding anniversary. But even in the wake of his tragic death, DT was remembered for what he was trying to do. As his father put it, “he hated what was going on around the world and wanted to make a difference.”

  • For some strange reason, DT seemed to ease the pain of Murph. Loving the hero week workouts and what they represent.

  • I found this infographic online today, interesting stuff! I especially like the 2010 winner’s quote, I should start WOD-ing with that in mind.

  • I did this very scaled (due to yesterday’s trashed hands – literlly can’t hold onto the bar) and was 10# lighter than the last time I did it. I can’t wait to do this one again when I’m 100%. I did it in less than 9 min with 65#.
Captain Paleo (Ross) and American Hero Girl (Jen G.) were AWESOME today! They took in a doubleheader at 5am with DT first, followed by Murph. They both finished at the same time all while dressed in costume. Amazing and entertaining to watch! Ba-Bam (for DT) and Ba-Bam (for Murph)!

  • Last night at the Oak Table we did a spagetti dinner for the Kingston Co-op and Childrens Hospital. It went great except I ate my first, second, and third plate of spagetti in months. I knew that this morning was going to be a little rough.

Wowzers. “DT” this morning was 13:39Rx It’s been a while since I was the last in class to finish. I had two Jens cheering me on.

And then things got weird. Last night Jen and I agreed to do “Murph” after “DT” After “DT” I was like “What was I thinking?”

    Finished 53:30Rx with a vest. What a grind. Ba-Bam!
