Hello Sun
The next 3 days are going to be sunny and warm. That means plenty of sunscreen, right? We have had it drilled into our heads that we need to be diligent about protecting our skin. The higher the SPF the better. We buy products such as moisturizer, foundation make-up and lip balm with sunscreen. But is this truly the best way to protect ourselves? This article in the New York Times outlines some of the isues with how sunscreens are labeled as well as starting a dialogue of the safety of common ingredients. Drs. Michael & Mary Dan Eades recommend in their book Protein Power to develop a tan, thus natural sun protection, by gradually exposing yourself to sun. This also allows for important Vitamin D exposure which is essentially non-existent with sunscreen. Paleo Chix posted on the benefits of coconut oil as a sunscreen. This is a fascinating read, but certainly a hard concept for some to swallow. Dan and I experimented with coconut oil as a sunscreen for a day at the pool, and were actually pleasantly surprised with the results.
Bottom line… do your research. Err on the side of less chemicals. Check out chemical free sunscreens by Burt’s Bees or Badger. By all means, don’t let sunscreen be your excuse to not use common sense when it comes to sun exposure. Oh, and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
