WOD:
Rest Day
Diet = “Way of Life”
When we talk about diet here at KCF, we are referring to a collection of eating habits. The origin and history of the word diet in Latin is “prescribed way of life”, in Greek “way of life, regimen, dwelling”. We gave you some basics in the Food as Fuel handout and have posted many times on a variety of nutrition topics. Now that the 30-day Paleo Challenge is coming to an end, I want you to consider what your diet will be moving forward. A good number of you will continue the challenge, some even said challenge aside you will continue Paleo as a lifestyle. For those of you who aren’t ready to take that step, consider making only slight modifications. For example, while Dan is going to continue to strict Paleo thorugh February I will likely add butter and honestly a beer every now and then (I mean really, it’s been a long time that I’ve been without beer!) You may decide to add high quality dairy and occasional gluten-free items. But be mindful of how these changes make you feel and why you are making the changes.
When planning out your future diet, absolute priority should go to clean eating – get rid of the processed fake foods that do nothing for your health or your wasitline. Stay as grain-free as possible. If you haven’t read the links from yestrday’s post, please go back and do that now. Then also read the post that inspired these two articles, Why Grains Are Not Necessary for A Nourishing Diet. For a more hard line view on the anti-grain argument read this post from Mark Sisson, of Mark’s Daily Apple entitled Why Grains are Unhealthy.
We strongly encourage you to arm yourself with knowledge, make informed decisions and then learn to appreciate high quality foods and let yourself feel entitled to them.

He’s never really been sticking to it:)
Brandi, does that mean than X is sticking it out through Feb too?!?
Caroline-
I am sticking with Paleo too. I will take a cheat day this week to have a latte, tortilla chips and a gluten free ice cream sandwich. Then back to it I go! It feels like a lifestyle now:)
Caroline,
You need to have full fat dairy. Non-fat dairy not only tastes like crap, but the absence of fat contributes to increased rate of absorption of sugar into the blood. Some fat free dairy products have high fructose corn syrup added, yet another reson to avoid (e.g. fat free half and half). Organic is always good. But the ideal dairy would be just like the ideal beef, grass-fed. There are also a handful of folks who are paleo but will include raw dairy. So yes, I prefer the greek yogurt due to higher protein content. Avoid any yogurt that has added sugar or high fructose corn syrup. For your coffee when your ready, ask for full fat cream, settle for half and half only if they don’t have the good stuff
Dan, I get all of that stuff… Seriously, I’m assuming you’re talking sugar free yogurts (the greek yogurts?), milk, real cheese… does half and half qualify? I’m missing a little cream in my coffee! I’ve still got a while before I’ll do dairy though… I’m going through Feb with Hal on the Paleo-bandwagon!
I can tell you what doesn’t qualify: individually celophane wrapped “cheese” slices, any dairy product that comes squirting out of a can, any “cheese” where they spell it CHEEZ, flavored milks promoted by a long-eared rabbit, yogurts doctored up to taste like some sort of decadent dessert, just to name a few.
Awesome job on the pull-ups Emily!!!
Amy, what do you consider “high quality dairy”?
Emily – AWESOME! They look soooo good! Proud of ya, girl!
