My take on “The 7 New Rules of Kid’s Nutrition”
by Amy Hollingsworth

For the most part, when I come across nutrition articles on mainstream websites, I tend to disagree with the majority of what is printed. That is becuase the nutrition advice that is supported by CrossFit is highly progressive and traditional “nutrition experts” have not yet caught up to the here and now. That said, I found an article about kid’s nutrition that wasn’t awful, The 7 New Rules of Kid’s Nutrition. You can read the entire article using the previous link, and I have added my two cents…
Rule #1:  Never skip breakfast. Ever. The authors are spot on with this one. My beef is the link at the end with the 20 Worst  Breakfast Foods, written by the “Eat This Not That” team. I don’t ever agree with their “eat this” recommendations. I say “Don’t eat this or that” if it is on that list. (BTW – I’ll tackle the “Eat This Not That” topic in another post)
Rule #2:  Snack with purpose. Snacks are crucial for kids. Of course top on the list for me include protein each time, whole veggies & fruits, and nuts. Gluten-free grains are the best choices for our kiddos.
Rule#3:  Beware of portion distortion. Absolutely one of the biggest issues for kids and adults alike!!! Again the link to best snacks – stay clear of those for the same reason as Rule #1.
Rule #4: Drink responsibly. Kids should be weaned from sweet drinks, whether they contain sugar, HFCS or artificial no-calorie sweeteners. Help their bodies stop the sweet cravings by eliminating these worthless beverages. On the worst drinks, again ditto Rule #1.
Rule #5: Eat more whole foods (and fewer science experiments). This is one of the best rules on the list. Teach your kids (and yourselves for that matter) to eat real food in its purest form.
Rule #6: Set the table. Perfect advice. For the recipe ideas at the end, try to do a few of them grain-free.
Rule #7: Kick the sugar habit. This is very important for many reasons. Sugar intake causes weight gain, dental caries, and leads people down the slippery slope of metabolic derangement. Not to mention its direct link to depression, and that’s the last thing any of us need.

With any nutrition changes, do things in steps and cut yourself a little slack. Re-read Dan’s blog on how to stay on track over the holidays. Good luck!

  • Tonight’s WOD was interesting. The snatch is one of those lifts I have always avoided. The most weight I put up tonight was 115(but sloppy). I was more compfortable with 95 while my form is still needing improvement. Thanks Dan and Amy for the great coaching.

  • Oh yeah, one more thing, then I’m done ranting about Eat This, Not That. Somewhere on his site he says that Macadamia nuts are low on the nutrition totem pole. I assume this is because they are loaded with that dreaded, evil F-word (fat). If this guy had any sense he would recognize that Macadamia nuts are second only to Walnuts when it comes to the Omega 3 to Omega 6 fat ratio. So, technically, they are the 2nd BEST nut.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that in our former life, Amy and I use to absolutely kill boxes of Reeses Peanut Butter Crunch Cereal. I mention this because it was listed in the link as the worst cereal. Seriously, a box of that cereal had a life expectancy of about 2 1/2 days in our house about 7 or 8 years ago. I can now count the number of bowls of cereal I have eaten in the last year on one hand, maybe even with a few fingers chopped off.

  • It’s Friday, sometimes I get easily fired up…especially when it comes to lame nutrition advice.

  • This is pretty simple nutrition advice that applies to EVERYONE, not just kids. My biggest beef with the article is the heavy reliance on Eat This, Not That. I have a suggestion, Read This (something like Paleo Diet or In Denfense of Food), Not That (Eat This, Not That). Essentially, all the ET,NT book says is “Eat this sh!tty food instead of that sh!tty food.” You’ll save some calories and cut out a bunch of that “evil” fat, but you’ll still be eating sh!tty food, plain and simple. It’s crappy advice written to appease the weak, easily offended nature of the typical American.
