Veteran’s Day
by Dan Hollingsworth

This is my first Veteran’s Day as a civilian in more than 10 years. All total I observed almost 19 Veteran’s Days as a member of the U.S. Armed Services (Army Reserves and active duty Navy). I have been so busy with the transition to civilian life, moving from California and opening a business that I haven’t really had time to reflect on the significance of that transition.

The tragic and unfortunate events that occurred at Fort Hood, Texas along with the high number of U.S. deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq during the month of October have been a sobering reminder of the life that I left behind. Mind you, I was never directly in harm’s way, never stepped foot on enemy soil, but I worked closely with those who did. I know that they are brave men and women, not really much different from you or me. I know that they make huge sacrifices in an effort to serve their country, provide for their families and protect our freedom and safety. Today, take a moment to honor those sacrifices. Whether or not you agree with the mission that these Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines have been called upon to do is irrelevant. Honor the fact that they selflessly put their safety on the line on a daily basis.

Today’s WOD will hurt, it will grind at you and it will break you down. There is no getting around that. When you feel your triceps start to give out and you pectorals scream that they can’t possibly produce one more rep, at that time take a moment to think about PO1 Jeff Taylor and the thousands of men and women who will never have the chance to “enjoy” another gruelling workout. Think about that for just a second and then dig deep and finish this sucker!

  • Ok…..I can’t do something like that and go straight back to work again! My arms were shaking and twitching. My poor client must have thought I was about to keel over. Other than that, thanks for handing me my ass!

  • Dan and Alan, thank you for faithfully serving our country. It is a privilege to know you and work out with you. I’ll miss the workout today (giving my body a much needed day of rest) but I’ll be virtually cheering you on through your WOD. It looks like a good one! I hate to miss it but with the exhaustion I’m feeling, I don’t think hand stand push-ups would be a good choice for me today. ;) So kick ass and I’ll be checking the blog for the results and feedback from this WOD.
