Do I need to get in shape in order to try CrossFit?
This is a common question asked by people who are watching a CrossFit workout for the first time. Many people watch a video and think to themselves “There is no way in hell I could do that stuff.” Frankly, many of them are right. I have been doing CrossFit for almost 2 years now and I watch videos of the top CrossFit athletes and have the exact same thought.
What you have to keep in mind is that “doing CrossFit” doesn’t mean you are doing it exactly as the people in the videos are. Remember, the hallmark of this program is that it is infinitely scalable. Translated that means it can be adapted to ANYBODY’s current fitness level. Case in point, we often conduct classes where our good friend Chris, former Division 1 college hockey player and my Mom, 62 year-old Halmoni (that’s Korean for Grandmother) who never played sports in her life, are hitting it in the exact same workout. They both are getting the same stimulus but the activity is scaled to meet their own personal needs and abilities.
This program has the unique ability to take people from all walks of life and all different athletic histories and push them toward the best shape of their lives. All you have to do is walk through the door and commit yourself to pushing as hard as you can, whether that means lifting 35lbs or 350lbs.

Waiting to be in shape for CrossFit means waiting… Life is too short. The first CF workout knocked me on my butt but it was also a HUGE inspiration. Seeing all the “crossfitters” doing things that I had only dreamed of being able to do was inspiring and once I jumped in, I got stronger, leaner, and better. I’m still modifying a lot of the exercises for now but guess what? A lot of them I’m now capable of doing on my own! The only way to get ready for CF is to do it. The only thing limiting people’s ability to do CF is their ability to take the first step. Once you do the first workout, you are a crossfitter. See ya tonight! Looking forward to the WOD.
